Ein Buch für Weihnachten – A book for Christmas – Un libro per Natale

I’d really like to recommend you this book. It is a very personal, empathic view on what we call the refugee crisis. If I could, I would put this beneath the Cristmas tree of all those who spread hatred towards refugees or are in favor of deportations to countries such as Afghanistan.

Humaن Rights

Israa Al-Ghomgham, a female human rights defender from Qatif, is about to be sentenced to death under the watchful eye of the world.

In a first move of its kind by the Saudi prosecution, Israa was hauled before the notorious Saudi counter-terrorism court in Riyadh (Specialised criminal court), where the public prosecutor demanded that Israa be punished with the maximum punishment of the death penalty.

This would be the first time that the Saudi prosecution have EVER called for capital punishment against a FEMALE activist.

Israa’s trial and her charges

Israa is being prosecuted as part of a mass trial, along with 5 other men, including her husband.

Let us stand with Raif Badawi – as long as it takes

otium satis

Another year gone and the Saudi blogger Raif Badawi is still in prison. On 17 june he will have spent six years as a prisoner.  So far our hopes have been disappointed, that the ongoing reforms in Saudi-Arabia reach out to the prison of Dhaban where not only Raif Badawi but as well his attorney and brother in law, Waleed Abu al-Khair serve their  long and harsh prison terms.

No doubt, any step away from the restrictions that so long have hemmed in the lives of the people and most especially the women in Saudi-Arabia is an overdue relief and welcome. Another encouraging step certainly was the restrictions for the ever vigiliant and waspish religious police. On the other hand, it is galling, that while many of Raif Badawi’s demands are being fulfilled step by tiny step, their author still remains isolated behind bars.

From far away and out of…
